Standing as a witness in a very special day in Bali: meet "Nyepi" and "Saraswati" at the same day in Bali

The Caka New Year 1940, the "NYEPI" holy day in March 2018.

This Nyepi day will be on March, 17th 2018. It is a silent day for Hindu followers which is held every year. This day refers to a good time to reflect and introspect our-self on a one-year journey. It's the purification of the Self and the Universe. People hope for better life in the coming year. Thus, there are 4 things that should be respected in Nyepi day; 1) Amati Geni (light is kept to a minimum or not at all except in hospitals ), 2) Amati Karya (no working/nobody doing normal activity), 3) Amati Lelungan (no traffic allowed except security guards and emergency vehicles), and 4) Amati Lelanguan.

So, basically nothing to do on Nyepi day, it's free of traffic, noise, pollution, even the airport is closed. Perhaps, one might think of the reduction of CO2 emissions thanks to Nyepi. Tenganan ancient village is the only part of Bali that doesn't celebrate Nyepi (because of no influence of Majapahit kingdom).

The beauty and splendor of Nyepi starts with a series of rituals performed before Nyepi, Melasti and Tawur Kesanga.

MELASTI (three days before Nyepi). The purpose of this ceremony is  to clean and purify all nature and its content using "Amerta" (the source for eternal life) or medium of water from the ocean or other water resources (ie lake, river, etc).  All symbols and sacred items of the temples from all villages are taken to the sea or river for purification.

Tawur Kesanga is associated with OGOH-OGOH parade held in the evening before Nyepi day. Ogoh-ogoh symbolizes evil spirits or Butha Kala in the form of fantastic monsters made of bamboo. This is made by the youth of Banjar. The purpose of this ritual is to keep harmonic balance between human being and God, human and human, and human and their environments.

SARASWATI is the Day of Knowledge held every six months (210 days). On this holy day, people make offerings and praying at home, temples, schools and offices. People pray for knowledge that can lead human into enlightenment.

The very special thing happen this year is that "SARASWATI" holy day will meet NYEPI holy day on March, 17th 2018. The meeting is due to different year system used by both holy days. Nyepi uses sasih system that comes every year while Saraswati uses wuku system that comes every 210 days.

PHDI (Indonesia Hinduism Society Organization) argues that guidelines needed to be made in order to be able to implement both holy days. Anticipation has been made previously that if there is a ceremony that coincided with Nyepi, then the ceremony can be implemented however must be finished at 06.00 Wita (ss).
